How Often Are Backups Taken and How Long Are They Kept?

One of the most common questions we hear is: how current are my backups, and how far back can I go? Here's everything you need to know about dotCanada's backup schedule and retention policy.

Backup Frequency

dotCanada automatically backs up every hosting account once per day. These backups run at the server level, so there's nothing you need to configure or enable - your account is backed up automatically every day.

Retention Period

Backups are retained for 30 days. This means at any given time, you have access to up to 30 daily snapshots of your account. You can restore your site, files, or databases to any of these points using JetBackup in cPanel.

Where Are Backups Stored?

All dotCanada backups are stored in a Canadian data centre, keeping your data within Canada at all times. This is important for businesses and individuals who require data residency in Canada.

Accessing Your Backups

To browse and restore from your backups, open JetBackup from the Files section in cPanel. Each restore category (files, databases, emails, etc.) shows a list of available backup dates.

Is the Backup Taken at a Specific Time?

Backups run on a scheduled server cycle. The exact time may vary slightly, but you can count on a fresh backup being available each day. If you need to capture a specific state of your site, you can also create a manual backup through JetBackup at any time.
