Sustainability
Green Hosting
Every website impacts the environment. dotCanada reduces the impact of your website to less than zero through energy conservation, double carbon offsets, and tree planting.
The Problem
Projected Impact
The internet has a carbon footprint - and it is growing fast.
Data centres currently account for an estimated 2-3% of global carbon emissions - on par with the entire airline industry - and AI-driven demand is accelerating this rapidly.
Global data centre electricity consumption is projected to more than double by 2026, with AI workloads alone adding over 200 TWh per year according to the IEA.
Of all the energy a data centre consumes, 40% goes purely towards keeping servers cool - making energy-efficient facility design critical.
Our Commitment
Reduce the Impact of Your Website
Climate change impacts us all, and together we can make a difference. By choosing green hosting, you are taking a meaningful step toward a sustainable future. dotCanada helps your website be part of the solution - powered by renewable energy and committed to reducing our digital carbon footprint.

Real Environmental Impact
Trees clean the air, filter water, and absorb carbon dioxide - storing it in their leaves, branches, and trunks while releasing oxygen back into the atmosphere.

FAQs
Green Hosting FAQ
Answers to common questions about our environmental commitment.
What does 200% green hosting mean?
It means that for every unit of electricity our infrastructure consumes, we purchase double the equivalent in renewable energy credits. The result is that your website is not just carbon neutral - it is carbon negative.
What are green energy tags?
Green energy tags (also called Renewable Energy Certificates or RECs) represent the generation of electricity from renewable sources like wind and solar. We purchase them through the Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF), a respected non-profit organization.
Where does the renewable energy come from?
The green tag energy we purchase comes from renewable sources in Alberta, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming - a mix of wind, solar, and hydro generation.
How does tree planting work?
For every new hosting account, dotCanada plants one tree in Canada through our partnership with OneTreePlanted. Trees are planted in Ontario, Nova Scotia, Quebec, British Columbia, or New Brunswick depending on where planting is most needed.
Is there any extra cost for green hosting?
No. All dotCanada hosting plans include our green hosting commitment at no additional charge. Energy conservation, double carbon offsets, and tree planting are built into everything we do.
Can I display the green hosting badge on my website?
Yes! All dotCanada hosting customers are welcome to display our green hosting badge on their website. Choose from four banner sizes in the Green Tags section above and copy the embed code.
