How to Create Your First WordPress Blog Post
WordPress was built for blogging, and publishing your first post is a great way to get comfortable with the platform. Posts are different from Pages - they're time-stamped, organized by categories and tags, and displayed in reverse chronological order on your blog feed.
Creating a New Post
- In your WordPress dashboard, go to Posts > Add New Post.
- Click Add title and enter a descriptive title for your post.
- Click in the editor area below and start adding content using blocks. Use Paragraph blocks for body text, Heading blocks for section titles, and Image blocks to add photos.
Adding Categories and Tags
In the right-hand panel, you'll find Categories and Tags sections.
- Categories are broad groupings for your posts (e.g., News, Tips, Recipes). Every post should have at least one category.
- Tags are more specific descriptors (e.g., beginner, tutorial, WordPress). Tags are optional but helpful for organizing content.
Setting a Featured Image
A featured image is the main image that represents your post - it typically appears at the top of the post and in blog listing pages. To set one, scroll down in the right-hand panel, click Featured image, and upload or select an image from your media library.
Publishing Your Post
- When your post is ready, click Publish in the top-right corner.
- Confirm by clicking Publish again.
- Click View Post to see it live on your site.
You can also schedule a post to go live at a future date and time by clicking the Publish date field before publishing. If you have any questions about posting content, contact our support team.
