WordPress Dashboard Overview for Beginners

The WordPress admin dashboard is your command centre for managing every aspect of your website. When you first log in, it can look a little overwhelming - but it's actually well organized once you know where everything lives. Here's a quick tour of the key areas.

The Left-Hand Menu

The main navigation runs down the left side of the screen. Here's what each section does:

• Dashboard - The home screen, showing a summary of your site's activity, quick draft, and WordPress news.
• Posts - Create and manage blog posts.
• Media - Your image and file library. Upload photos, PDFs, and other files here.
• Pages - Create and manage static pages like About, Contact, or Services.
• Comments - Moderate reader comments on your posts.
• Appearance - Change your theme, customize your site's look, manage menus, and access the theme editor.
• Plugins - Install, activate, deactivate, and delete plugins.
• Users - Manage who has access to your WordPress site and what they can do.
• Tools - Import and export content, and access other utilities.
• Settings - Configure your site's general settings, reading preferences, permalinks, and more.

The Top Admin Toolbar

The black bar at the top of the screen gives you quick access to your site's front end, new content creation shortcuts, comment notifications, and your user profile.

The Dashboard Home Screen

The default dashboard home screen contains several widgets - panels showing information like recent drafts, activity, and quick stats. You can rearrange or hide these widgets by clicking Screen Options in the top-right corner.

As you install plugins, they may add their own items to the left menu. Don't worry - this is normal, and you can often move or collapse those items to keep things tidy.
