How to Set Up a Static Homepage in WordPress
By default, WordPress displays your latest blog posts on the homepage. But for most business and portfolio websites, you'll want a custom designed page - not a blog feed - as your homepage. WordPress makes this easy to configure.
What You'll Need
Before changing your homepage setting, you'll need to have created at least one Page in WordPress. If you want a separate blog page as well, create two pages:
- One page called Home (or whatever you want your homepage to be)
- One page called Blog (which will display your posts)
Leave both pages empty for now - WordPress will handle the content display automatically.
Setting Up Your Static Homepage
- In your WordPress dashboard, go to Settings > Reading.
- Under Your homepage displays, select A static page.
- In the Homepage dropdown, select the page you want to use as your homepage (e.g., Home).
- If you created a blog page, select it in the Posts page dropdown (e.g., Blog).
- Click Save Changes.
After Saving
Visit your domain to confirm your custom homepage is now showing. Your blog posts will be accessible at the URL of the page you assigned as the Posts page (e.g., yourdomain.com/blog).
You can now go back and edit your Home page with your real content - add a welcome message, services, images, or anything else that represents your brand. If your theme includes a setup wizard or demo content, now is a great time to use it.
