How to Set Up DNS Zones for Client Accounts

Every domain hosted on your reseller account needs a DNS zone - a file that tells the internet where to find the website, email, and other services for that domain. WHM makes it straightforward to create and manage DNS zones.

Creating a DNS Zone

When you create a new cPanel account in WHM and enter the client's domain, WHM automatically creates a DNS zone for that domain. In most cases, no manual DNS zone creation is needed.

Manually Adding or Editing a DNS Zone

  1. In WHM, go to DNS Functions then Edit DNS Zone
  2. Select the domain whose zone you want to edit
  3. Add or modify records as needed (A, CNAME, MX, TXT, etc.)
  4. Click Save

Common DNS Records to Configure

  • A Record: Points the domain to your server's IP address
  • MX Record: Directs email to the correct mail server
  • CNAME Record: Creates an alias (e.g., www pointing to the root domain)
  • TXT Record: Used for SPF, DKIM, and domain verification

Adding a New DNS Zone

If you need to host a domain that wasn't set up with a cPanel account, go to DNS Functions then Add a DNS Zone and enter the domain name and server IP.

Deleting a DNS Zone

Go to DNS Functions then Delete a DNS Zone. Be careful - deleting a zone will break all DNS resolution for that domain. If you need help with DNS configuration, contact our support team.
