How to Set Up Branded Nameservers for Resellers

Branded nameservers (also called private nameservers) let you present a professional, white-label image to your clients. Instead of pointing to dotCanada's nameservers, your clients' domains can point to ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com.

Step 1: Register the Nameserver Hostnames

Log into your domain registrar (where you registered your reseller domain) and create glue records (also called host records) for your nameservers:

  • ns1.yourdomain.com → your server's IP address
  • ns2.yourdomain.com → your server's IP address (same IP is fine for basic setups)

This step must be done at the registrar level, not in cPanel or WHM.

Step 2: Add DNS A Records

In WHM, go to DNS Functions then Add a DNS Zone (if not already present for your domain). Add A records pointing ns1 and ns2 subdomains to your server IP.

Step 3: Configure WHM

  1. In WHM, go to Server Configuration then Basic cPanel/WHM Setup
  2. Scroll to the Nameservers section
  3. Enter ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com in the nameserver fields
  4. Save your changes

Step 4: Allow Propagation

DNS propagation can take up to 24–48 hours. Once complete, you can point client domains to your branded nameservers. Need help with this setup? Contact our support team.
