How to Set Up DMARC for Your Domain
DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance) is a DNS record that tells receiving mail servers what to do when an email fails SPF or DKIM checks. It helps protect your domain from being used in spoofing or phishing attacks.
Prerequisites
Before setting up DMARC, make sure you have both SPF and DKIM already configured and verified for your domain. DMARC builds on these two standards.
Adding a DMARC Record
- Log in to cPanel and go to Domains > Zone Editor.
- Click Add Record.
- Set the type to TXT.
- Set the Name to
_dmarc.yourdomain.ca. - Set the TTL to
3600. - In the Value field, enter a DMARC record. A safe starting point:
v=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:dmarc@yourdomain.ca - Click Save Record.
Understanding DMARC Policies
p=none- monitor only, take no action (good for starting out)p=quarantine- send failing messages to spamp=reject- reject failing messages entirelyrua=- where to send aggregate reports
Start with p=none, monitor the reports, and gradually move to quarantine or reject once you're confident legitimate email is passing. Need guidance? Contact our support team.
