How to Unlock a Domain for Transfer
Domain names are protected by a Transfer Lock (also called a registrar lock) by default. This lock prevents unauthorized transfers away from dotCanada. Before you can transfer your domain to another registrar, you must disable this lock.
Why Does the Transfer Lock Exist?
The Transfer Lock is a security feature. It ensures that your domain can't be moved without your explicit permission. It's recommended to keep it enabled whenever you're not actively transferring a domain.
How to Unlock Your Domain
- Log in to your dotCanada client area.
- Click on Domains in the navigation menu.
- Find and click on the domain you want to unlock.
- Look for the Transfer Lock or Registrar Lock setting.
- Toggle it to Off or Disabled and save your changes.
After Unlocking
Once unlocked, your domain is ready to be transferred. You should also request your EPP/auth code at this point if you haven't already - the new registrar will need it to complete the transfer.
Remember to re-enable the Transfer Lock if you decide not to proceed with the transfer. Leaving your domain unlocked indefinitely is not recommended from a security standpoint.
Note on .ca Domains
CIRA-managed .ca domains follow slightly different procedures. If you're having trouble unlocking a .ca domain, contact our support team for assistance.
