How to Renew a Domain Name

Keeping your domain renewed is essential - an expired domain can take your website and email offline, and someone else may be able to register it. dotCanada makes it easy to renew your domain manually or automatically.

Renew Your Domain Manually

1. Log in to your dotCanada client area.
2. Navigate to Domains and select the domain you want to renew.
3. Click Renew and choose how many years you'd like to extend your registration.
4. Complete the checkout process. Your new expiry date will be updated immediately.

Set Up Auto-Renewal

To avoid the hassle of manual renewals, we strongly recommend enabling auto-renewal. With auto-renewal on, dotCanada will automatically charge your payment method on file before your domain expires.

1. In your client area, go to Domains and click on your domain name.
2. Find the Auto-Renewal option and toggle it on.
3. Make sure you have a valid payment method saved in your account.

What Happens If a Domain Expires?

If your domain isn't renewed before its expiry date, it enters a grace period during which you can still renew it - usually for a short window after expiry. After that, it may enter a redemption period (with a higher recovery fee) before eventually being released for anyone to register.

dotCanada sends renewal reminder emails in advance of expiry, but we recommend not relying solely on reminders. Enabling auto-renewal is the best way to protect your domain. If you have concerns about a domain expiry, contact our support team right away.
