How to Transfer a Domain Away
If you need to move your domain from dotCanada to another registrar, we'll help make the process as smooth as possible. Here's what you need to do.
Step 1: Unlock Your Domain
Before initiating a transfer at your new registrar, you must disable the Transfer Lock on your domain. Log in to your dotCanada client area, navigate to Domains, select your domain, and turn off the Transfer Lock.
Step 2: Get Your EPP/Auth Code
Your new registrar will ask for an EPP code (also called an authorization code or auth code) to verify that you have permission to transfer the domain. You can request this code directly from your dotCanada client area:
- Go to Domains and click on the domain you're transferring.
- Find the EPP Code or Authorization Code option and request it.
- The code will be emailed to the administrative contact address on file for the domain.
Step 3: Initiate the Transfer at Your New Registrar
Follow your new registrar's process for incoming transfers. You'll enter your domain name and EPP code. Once submitted, you may receive an email asking you to confirm the transfer - be sure to approve it promptly.
What to Expect
Transfers typically take 5–7 days. Your domain will continue to resolve normally throughout the process. Once complete, management of the domain moves to your new registrar.
