How to Transfer a Domain to Us

Transferring your domain to dotCanada consolidates your hosting and domain management in one place. The process is straightforward, but there are a few things to prepare before you begin.

Before You Start

  • Your domain must be at least 60 days old and not have been transferred within the last 60 days.
  • The domain must be unlocked (Transfer Lock disabled) at your current registrar.
  • You'll need the domain's EPP/authorization code (also called an auth code) from your current registrar.
  • Make sure your WHOIS contact email is accessible - you may receive a confirmation email during the transfer.

How to Initiate the Transfer

  1. Log in to your dotCanada client area and go to Domains > Transfer a Domain.
  2. Enter your domain name and click Check Transfer.
  3. Enter the EPP/auth code when prompted.
  4. Review the transfer details and complete checkout. Transferring a domain typically adds one year to your registration.

How Long Does It Take?

Domain transfers generally take 5–7 days to complete. During this time, your domain continues to resolve normally - your website and email won't go down.

Note for .ca Domains

.ca domain transfers are managed through CIRA and follow a slightly different process. You'll still need your EPP code, but the transfer is typically faster.

If you run into any issues during the transfer process, contact our support team and we'll help you sort it out.
