How to Use the cPanel File Manager

The cPanel File Manager is a built-in tool that lets you browse, create, edit, upload, and delete files on your hosting account directly from your browser - no FTP client required. dotCanada's cPanel hosting comes with the full-featured File Manager, making day-to-day file management quick and convenient.

Opening File Manager

1. Log in to your cPanel account.
2. In the Files section, click File Manager.
3. File Manager will open, typically starting in your home directory or public_html folder.

Navigating the Interface

• Left Panel: A folder tree that lets you browse your directory structure.
• Right Panel: Displays the contents of the currently selected folder.
• Toolbar: Contains buttons for common actions including New File, New Folder, Upload, Download, Copy, Move, Rename, Delete, and Edit.

Key Actions

• Create a File or Folder: Click New File or New Folder in the toolbar, enter a name, and click Create.
• Edit a File: Right-click on a file and choose Edit to open the built-in text editor. This is handy for quickly editing HTML, PHP, or configuration files.
• Rename a File or Folder: Right-click and select Rename, or click the item and use the toolbar button.
• Delete Files: Select one or more files and click Delete in the toolbar. Deleted items are moved to the Trash folder, which you can empty separately.
• Copy or Move: Select files, then click Copy or Move and enter the destination path.

Your Website Folder

Your main website files should be placed in the public_html folder. This is the web root - anything in this folder is accessible via your domain name. Subfolders for addon domains and subdomains are also created inside public_html.
