How to Set Up Email Forwarders in cPanel
Email forwarders let you automatically redirect messages from one email address to another. This is useful if you want emails sent to info@yourdomain.com to appear in your personal inbox without maintaining a separate account. dotCanada makes this easy to configure from cPanel.
Creating an Email Forwarder
- Log in to cPanel and go to the Email section.
- Click Forwarders.
- Click Add Forwarder.
- Enter the address you want to forward from (e.g.,
info) and select your domain. - Under Destination, choose one of the following:
- Forward to Email Address - enter the destination address (can be any email, including Gmail, Outlook, etc.).
- Discard and send an error to the sender - silently discards the email or bounces it.
- Pipe to a Program - for advanced use cases, sends the email to a script.
- Click Add Forwarder to save.
Domain-Level Forwarders
You can also set up a domain forwarder, which forwards all email for an entire domain to another domain. This is useful during domain migrations. Click Add Domain Forwarder on the Forwarders page to configure this.
Things to Keep in Mind
- Forwarding to a free email provider (like Gmail) may cause spam filtering issues, as the message's original sender won't match your domain.
- Forwarders do not store a local copy of the email unless you also have a matching mailbox configured.
- You can remove a forwarder at any time from the Forwarders list.
