How to Restore Your Website from a Local Backup
If you have a backup file stored on your local computer - such as one downloaded from JetBackup or the cPanel Backup Wizard - you can restore it to your dotCanada hosting account using the cPanel Backup Wizard.
What You'll Need
- A full cPanel backup file (typically a
.tar.gzfile) - Access to your cPanel account
Steps to Restore from a Local Backup
- Log in to cPanel and go to the Files section.
- Click Backup Wizard.
- Click Restore.
- Choose the type of restore you want to perform - Home Directory, MySQL Databases, or Email Forwarders and Filters.
- Click Choose File and select your local backup file.
- Click Upload to begin the restore process.
cPanel will upload and process the backup file. Large files may take several minutes to complete.
Restoring Files via FTP
If your backup contains website files and you'd prefer to upload them manually, you can use an FTP client like FileZilla to upload files directly to your public_html directory. This gives you more control over which files get replaced.
Restoring a Database Separately
If your local backup includes a database export (an .sql file), you can restore it using phpMyAdmin. See our guide on restoring a MySQL database using phpMyAdmin for step-by-step instructions.
If you run into any issues during a local backup restore, contact our support team and we'll walk you through it.
