How to Set Up Account Backups in WHM

Regular backups are one of the most important safeguards for any hosting environment. WHM provides a built-in backup configuration tool that lets you schedule automated backups for all client accounts on your reseller plan.

Configuring Backup Settings

  1. In WHM, go to Backup then Backup Configuration
  2. Enable backups by toggling the Backup Status to On
  3. Choose a Backup Type: Compressed or Uncompressed (compressed saves space)
  4. Set a Backup Interval: Daily, Weekly, or Monthly
  5. Choose which days of the week backups run
  6. Set the number of daily, weekly, and monthly backups to retain
  7. Configure a backup destination (local server or remote FTP/SFTP)

Backup Destinations

Storing backups on the same server as your hosting is not ideal. WHM supports remote backup destinations including:

  • FTP or SFTP servers
  • Amazon S3 and compatible storage
  • Google Drive (via third-party configuration)

What Gets Backed Up

WHM backups include home directory files, MySQL databases, email accounts and filters, cron jobs, and DNS zones - essentially a full snapshot of each cPanel account.

Important Notes

  • dotCanada may perform its own server-level backups, but resellers should configure their own backups as an additional layer of protection
  • Test your backup restoration process periodically to ensure backups are valid
