How to Add an A Record

An A record (Address record) maps a domain name or subdomain to an IPv4 address. It's one of the most fundamental DNS record types - your main domain's A record tells the world what server your website lives on.

When Do You Need an A Record?

  • Pointing your root domain (e.g., example.ca) to a web server IP
  • Creating a subdomain that points to a specific IP address (e.g., shop.example.ca)
  • Setting up a custom mail server by pointing a hostname to an IP

How to Add an A Record in cPanel

  1. Log in to cPanel and go to Domains > Zone Editor.
  2. Click Manage next to your domain.
  3. Click Add Record, then select A from the Type dropdown.
  4. In the Name field, enter your domain or subdomain. To point the root domain, enter @ or leave it as the domain itself. For a subdomain, enter just the subdomain part (e.g., shop).
  5. Set the TTL. The default is usually fine; a lower value like 300 helps changes propagate faster.
  6. In the Address field, enter the IPv4 address you want the domain to point to.
  7. Click Add Record to save.

A Record vs. CNAME

Use an A record when you know the exact IP address. If you want to alias one hostname to another (and don't have a static IP), use a CNAME - but note that CNAMEs cannot be set on the root domain; only A records can be used there.
