How to Use the Mime Types Manager in cPanel

MIME types tell your web server what type of content a file contains so browsers know how to handle it. For example, the server uses MIME types to tell a browser whether a file is a web page, an image, a video, or a downloadable file. The MIME Types manager in cPanel lets you add custom MIME types when needed.

Accessing MIME Types

  1. Log in to cPanel at yourdomain.com/cpanel.
  2. Go to the Advanced section and click MIME Types.

Adding a Custom MIME Type

  1. In the Create a MIME Type section, enter the MIME Type (e.g., video/mp4).
  2. Enter the file Extension associated with that MIME type (e.g., mp4). You can enter multiple extensions separated by spaces.
  3. Click Add.

Removing a MIME Type

User-defined MIME types appear in the list below the creation form. To remove a custom MIME type, click the Delete link next to it. Note that you can only delete MIME types you've added yourself - system MIME types cannot be removed.

When You Might Need Custom MIME Types

  • Serving a new or uncommon file format (e.g., .webp images or custom font files).
  • Forcing a file to download rather than open in the browser.
  • Ensuring a specific file type is served with the correct content type header for an API or application.

Most common file types are already configured with appropriate MIME types by default on dotCanada servers. If you're unsure whether a custom MIME type is needed, please contact our support team for guidance.
