How to Set Up Two-Factor Authentication in cPanel
Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an important layer of security to your cPanel account. Even if someone obtains your password, they will not be able to log in without also having access to your authentication device. dotCanada strongly recommends enabling 2FA on your cPanel account.
What You Need
You will need an authenticator app on your smartphone. Popular options include:
- Google Authenticator (iOS and Android)
- Authy (iOS and Android)
- Microsoft Authenticator (iOS and Android)
Setting Up Two-Factor Authentication
- Log in to cPanel and go to the Security section.
- Click Two-Factor Authentication.
- Click Set Up Two-Factor Authentication.
- A QR code will appear. Open your authenticator app and scan the QR code. If your app doesn't support QR scanning, you can enter the key manually.
- Your app will display a 6-digit time-based code. Enter this code in the Security Code field to verify the setup.
- Click Configure Two-Factor Authentication to complete the process.
Logging In with 2FA Enabled
After 2FA is set up, when you log in to cPanel you will be asked to enter your password as usual, followed by a 6-digit code from your authenticator app. This code changes every 30 seconds.
Important: Save Your Backup Codes
If you lose access to your authenticator app, you may be locked out of cPanel. Store your account credentials and backup information securely. If you lose access, contact our support team and we can help you regain entry after identity verification.
