How to Manage Spam Filters in cPanel
Unwanted email is a reality for any inbox. dotCanada's cPanel includes Apache SpamAssassin, a powerful spam filtering tool that scores incoming messages and helps keep junk out of your inbox.
Enabling SpamAssassin
- Log in to cPanel and go to the Email section.
- Click Spam Filters.
- Toggle Process New Emails and Mark them as Spam to on. This enables SpamAssassin and adds a
***SPAM***tag to the subject line of suspicious messages. - Optionally enable Automatically Delete New Spam (Auto-Delete) if you want spam to be deleted automatically rather than tagged.
Adjusting the Spam Threshold
Click Spam Threshold Score to adjust how aggressively SpamAssassin flags messages. The default is 5 - a lower number is more aggressive. If you are getting too many false positives, try raising the threshold to 7 or 8.
Blacklists and Whitelists
Under Additional Configurations (For Advanced Users), you can manage blacklists and whitelists:
- Blacklist - always mark email from a specific address or domain as spam.
- Whitelist - never mark email from a specific address as spam, even if it scores high.
Tips
- Avoid using auto-delete initially - start with tagging so you can review what gets flagged before committing to deletion.
- Check your spam or junk folder regularly if you're missing expected emails.
- For persistent spam problems or deliverability issues, contact our support team for assistance.
