How to Manage Spam Filters in cPanel

Unwanted email is a reality for any inbox. dotCanada's cPanel includes Apache SpamAssassin, a powerful spam filtering tool that scores incoming messages and helps keep junk out of your inbox.

Enabling SpamAssassin

  1. Log in to cPanel and go to the Email section.
  2. Click Spam Filters.
  3. Toggle Process New Emails and Mark them as Spam to on. This enables SpamAssassin and adds a ***SPAM*** tag to the subject line of suspicious messages.
  4. Optionally enable Automatically Delete New Spam (Auto-Delete) if you want spam to be deleted automatically rather than tagged.

Adjusting the Spam Threshold

Click Spam Threshold Score to adjust how aggressively SpamAssassin flags messages. The default is 5 - a lower number is more aggressive. If you are getting too many false positives, try raising the threshold to 7 or 8.

Blacklists and Whitelists

Under Additional Configurations (For Advanced Users), you can manage blacklists and whitelists:

  • Blacklist - always mark email from a specific address or domain as spam.
  • Whitelist - never mark email from a specific address as spam, even if it scores high.

Tips

  • Avoid using auto-delete initially - start with tagging so you can review what gets flagged before committing to deletion.
  • Check your spam or junk folder regularly if you're missing expected emails.
  • For persistent spam problems or deliverability issues, contact our support team for assistance.
