How to Create and Manage FTP Accounts in cPanel
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) lets you connect to your hosting account from your computer using an FTP client like FileZilla, allowing you to upload and download files efficiently. dotCanada's cPanel includes full FTP account management so you can create separate accounts for team members, developers, or specific areas of your website.
Creating an FTP Account
- Log in to your cPanel account.
- In the Files section, click FTP Accounts.
- Fill in the following fields:
- Log In: Enter a username for the FTP account. Your cPanel username will be automatically appended as a suffix.
- Password: Create a strong password for the account.
- Directory: Set the root directory this FTP user can access. For full access to your site, use
public_html. To restrict access to a specific folder, enter a path likepublic_html/subfolder. - Quota: Optionally set a disk space limit for this FTP user, or leave it as Unlimited.
- Click Create FTP Account.
FTP Connection Details
Once the account is created, use the following details to connect with an FTP client:
- Host: Your domain name (e.g.,
yourdomain.com) - Username: The full FTP username shown in the account list
- Password: The password you set
- Port:

Managing Existing FTP Accounts
Scroll down the FTP Accounts page to see all accounts. From there you can:

- Remove an account by clicking Delete.
Note: The primary cPanel FTP account cannot be deleted - it is tied to your main cPanel login. If you need help setting up or troubleshooting FTP access, contact our support team.
