How to Connect to FTP Using FileZilla

FileZilla is a free, open-source FTP client that is one of the most popular tools for transferring files to and from your hosting account. It is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and works seamlessly with dotCanada hosting accounts. This guide walks you through setting up a connection to your dotCanada hosting account using FileZilla.

Before You Begin

Make sure you have your FTP credentials ready. You will need your FTP username and password from your dotCanada welcome email or from the FTP Accounts section in cPanel. You can also use your main cPanel username and password.

Quick Connect Method

1. Open FileZilla on your computer.
2. At the top of the window, fill in the Quickconnect bar:
   • Host: Your domain name (e.g., yourdomain.com) or your server's IP address.
   • Username: Your FTP or cPanel username.
   • Password: Your FTP or cPanel password.
   • Port: 21 for standard FTP.
3. Click Quickconnect.

Setting Up a Saved Site (Recommended)

1. In FileZilla, go to File > Site Manager (or press Ctrl+S).
2. Click New Site and give it a name.
3. Set the Protocol to FTP – File Transfer Protocol. If your account has SSH enabled, choose SFTP – SSH File Transfer Protocol and use port 22.
4. Enter your Host, User, and Password.
5. Set Logon Type to Normal.
6. Click Connect.

Navigating and Transferring Files

Once connected, the left panel shows your local computer's files and the right panel shows your hosting account's files. Navigate to public_html on the right side to access your website's root folder. Drag and drop files between panels to upload or download them.
