How to Create a Subdomain in cPanel

A subdomain is a prefix added to your main domain name, creating a separate web address you can use to organize your website. For example, blog.yourdomain.com or shop.yourdomain.com are subdomains. dotCanada makes it easy to create subdomains directly through cPanel.

Steps to Create a Subdomain

  1. Log in to your cPanel account.
  2. In the Domains section, click Subdomains.
  3. In the Subdomain field, type the prefix you want to use (for example, blog).
  4. In the Domain dropdown, select the main domain you want to attach the subdomain to.
  5. The Document Root field will auto-populate with a suggested folder path (for example, public_html/blog). You can leave this as-is or change it to a custom path.
  6. Click Create to add the subdomain.

What Happens After Creation

Once the subdomain is created, cPanel will automatically create the document root folder in your File Manager. Any files you place in that folder will be served at your new subdomain address. DNS records are also updated automatically for domains hosted on dotCanada's nameservers.

Common Uses for Subdomains

  • Blog: blog.yourdomain.com
  • Online store: shop.yourdomain.com
  • Staging environment: staging.yourdomain.com
  • Client portals or member areas: members.yourdomain.com

Managing Existing Subdomains

To view, modify, or delete existing subdomains, scroll down on the Subdomains page to see a list of all current subdomains associated with your account. From there you can remove any subdomain you no longer need.
