How to Change the PHP Version in cPanel

dotCanada uses the MultiPHP Manager to give you full control over which PHP version runs for each of your domains and subdomains. Whether you need PHP 7.4 for a legacy application or the latest PHP 8.x for modern compatibility, switching versions is quick and easy.

Changing the PHP Version

  1. Log in to cPanel at yourdomain.com/cpanel.
  2. Go to the Software section and click MultiPHP Manager.
  3. In the vHost table, find the domain or subdomain you want to update.
  4. Check the checkbox next to that domain.
  5. In the PHP Version dropdown at the top, select your desired version (e.g., PHP 8.2).
  6. Click Apply.

The change takes effect immediately - no server restart required.

Checking the Current PHP Version

You can also navigate to Software > PHP Version (sometimes labelled Select PHP Version) to see the active version for your account and manage which PHP extensions are enabled.

Which PHP Version Should You Use?

  • Most modern WordPress sites work best with PHP 8.1 or 8.2.
  • Some older plugins or themes may require PHP 7.4.
  • Always check your application's documentation for compatibility before switching.

After Changing PHP Versions

After switching, test your site thoroughly to make sure everything works as expected. Check for PHP errors in your error log if something breaks.
