How to Install a WordPress Theme

Installing a WordPress theme is quick and straightforward. You can install a free theme directly from your WordPress dashboard, or upload a premium theme you've purchased from a third-party marketplace. Here's how to do both.

Installing a Free Theme from the WordPress Directory

1. In your WordPress dashboard, go to Appearance > Themes.
2. Click the Add New Theme button at the top of the page.
3. Browse or search for the theme you want. You can filter by features, layout, and subject.
4. Hover over a theme and click Preview to see how it looks, or click Install to install it right away.
5. After installation, click Activate to make it your active theme.

Installing a Premium Theme (ZIP Upload)

1. Download the theme's .zip file from the provider's website. Make sure you're downloading the installable theme file, not the full package (some vendors include documentation and extras in the download).
2. In your WordPress dashboard, go to Appearance > Themes and click Add New Theme.
3. Click the Upload Theme button at the top.
4. Click Choose File, select the .zip file, and click Install Now.
5. Once installed, click Activate.

After Activating a Theme

Once your theme is active, you may see a prompt to install recommended plugins or run a setup wizard - this is common with premium themes and helps you configure the design quickly.

Visit your site's front end to see how it looks. You can customize most themes via Appearance > Customize, which opens the WordPress theme customizer with a live preview.
