How to Add Widgets to Your WordPress Site
Widgets are small blocks of content you can add to widget-ready areas of your theme - typically sidebars, footers, and header areas. Common examples include recent posts lists, search bars, tag clouds, and custom text blocks.
Accessing the Widget Editor
Go to Appearance > Widgets in your WordPress dashboard. If your theme supports the newer block-based widget editor (introduced in WordPress 5.8), you'll see a familiar block editor interface. Older themes may show the classic drag-and-drop widget panel.
Adding a Widget (Block Editor)
- Click the + icon inside a widget area (e.g., Footer, Sidebar).
- Search for the block you want - such as Search, Latest Posts, or Custom HTML.
- Click the block to add it to that widget area.
- Configure the block settings in the right panel.
- Click Update to save your changes.
Adding a Widget (Classic Editor)
- Find the widget you want in the Available Widgets list on the left.
- Drag it into the desired widget area on the right, or click the widget and select a location from the dropdown.
- Expand the widget to configure its options.
- Click Save.
Removing a Widget
In the block editor, select the widget block and press Delete or use the block toolbar. In the classic editor, expand the widget and click Delete.
