How to Recover Deleted Emails in Webmail

Accidentally deleted an important email? Here's what you can do to try to recover it in Roundcube webmail or via your email client.

Check the Trash Folder First

In Roundcube webmail, deleted emails go to the Trash folder first. Log in at yourdomain.com/webmail and check the Trash folder in the left sidebar. If your email is there, right-click it and choose Move to > Inbox (or your preferred folder).

Permanently Deleted Emails

If you've already emptied the Trash - or if your email client was configured to delete messages immediately without moving them to Trash - recovery is more difficult. There is no built-in undelete feature once the Trash is emptied.

Options for Recovery

  • Check your email client - if you use Outlook, Thunderbird, or Apple Mail with IMAP, deleted messages may still be in a local Deleted Items or Trash folder within the client, even if they're gone from the server.
  • Ask dotCanada about backups - depending on your hosting plan, server backups may be available. Contact us as soon as possible - backups are not guaranteed and are not a substitute for your own backups.

Preventing Future Accidental Deletion

  • Regularly export important emails from webmail as .mbox files.
  • Configure your email client to move deleted messages to Trash rather than permanently deleting them.
  • Set your Trash folder to empty after 30 days instead of immediately.

If you need help checking backup availability, contact our support team as soon as possible.
