How to Set Custom Nameservers for Your Domain
Nameservers tell the internet where to look up the DNS records for your domain. By default, dotCanada domains use ns1.dotcanada.com and ns2.dotcanada.com. However, you can change these to point to another DNS provider or hosting company.
When Would You Change Nameservers?
- You're moving your website to a new host that manages its own DNS
- You're using a third-party DNS service like Cloudflare for performance or security
- Your hosting plan at another provider requires their nameservers
How to Update Nameservers at dotCanada
- Log in to your dotCanada client area.
- Go to Domains and click on the domain you want to update.
- Find the Nameservers section.
- Select Use Custom Nameservers and enter the nameserver addresses provided by your new DNS provider. Most providers give you at least two nameservers (e.g.,
ns1.example.comandns2.example.com). - Save the changes.
How Long Does It Take?
Nameserver changes can take up to 24–48 hours to propagate fully. During this time, some users may still resolve your domain using the old nameservers. Plan nameserver changes during low-traffic periods if possible.
