How to Create and Restore Backups in cPanel
Keeping regular backups of your website is one of the most important things you can do as a site owner. dotCanada provides multiple backup options through cPanel, including the built-in Backup tool and JetBackup for more advanced restore capabilities.
Creating a Full Backup
- Log in to cPanel at
yourdomain.com/cpanel. - Go to the Files section and click Backup.
- Under Full Backup, click Download a Full Website Backup.
- Choose a Backup Destination - Home Directory is the default.
- Enter your email address to be notified when the backup is complete.
- Click Generate Backup.
Once generated, download the .tar.gz file to your local computer for safekeeping.
Creating Partial Backups
You can also download individual components from the Partial Backups section, including your home directory files, MySQL databases, email forwarders, and email filters. These are useful for quickly restoring a specific component.
Restoring a Backup
- In the Backup section, scroll to Restore.
- Select the type of backup you want to restore (Home Directory, MySQL Databases, etc.).
- Browse for the backup file on your computer and click Upload.
Using JetBackup
dotCanada also offers JetBackup, which provides automated daily backups with easy one-click restore for files, databases, and emails. Look for the JetBackup icon in your cPanel dashboard for a more powerful restore experience.
