Understanding Inodes and How They Affect Your Hosting

You might have come across the term inode when reviewing your hosting account limits. It's not something most people think about, but understanding inodes can save you from some frustrating hosting issues down the road.

What Is an Inode?

An inode is a data structure on the filesystem that stores information about a file or directory. In simple terms: every file and folder on your hosting account counts as one inode. This includes files in your website directories, email messages stored on the server, database files, cache files, and log files.

Why Do Inodes Matter?

Shared hosting plans have an inode limit. If you hit that limit, you won't be able to create new files - which can break your website, block incoming email, and prevent applications from functioning properly. This can happen even if you still have plenty of disk space available.

How to Check Your Inode Usage

Your current inode usage is visible in your cPanel account on the main dashboard or statistics panel. Look for the Inodes figure in the resource summary.

Common Sources of High Inode Usage

• Large numbers of stored emails in mailboxes
• WordPress cache plugins generating thousands of cached files
• Old log files and session files that accumulate over time
• Backup files stored inside your hosting account
• Many small uploaded images or attachments
