Finding Softaculous in cPanel
Log in to cPanel and scroll down to the Software section. You will see the Softaculous Apps Installer icon. Click it to open the Softaculous dashboard, where you can browse or search for applications. WordPress is featured prominently because it is by far the most popular install.
Installing WordPress with Softaculous
Click on WordPress (or search for it), then click Install Now. You will see a form with a few important choices:
Protocol and domain - Choose whether to install to https:// (always choose this if you have an SSL certificate, which all dotCanada plans include) and select which domain to install to if you have multiple.
Directory - Leave this blank to install WordPress at the root of your domain (yourdomain.ca). If you type blog here, WordPress installs at yourdomain.ca/blog. Most people installing a main website should leave it blank.
Site name and description - These appear in your browser tab and can be changed later inside WordPress.
Admin credentials - Choose a strong username (not "admin") and a unique password. Enter an email address you check regularly - WordPress sends important notifications there.
Select language - WordPress is available in French and English if you are building a bilingual Canadian site.
Auto-updates - Enable automatic updates for minor WordPress versions. For major versions, consider updating manually after testing.
Click Install and Softaculous will have your WordPress site ready in about a minute. You will receive the admin URL and credentials by email.

Managing Your Installations
Softaculous tracks every application you install and provides a management dashboard. From there you can:
Update - Softaculous alerts you when updates are available and can apply them with one click. Keeping applications updated is one of the most important security practices.
Backup - Create a snapshot of your installation (files and database) directly from Softaculous. These backups are separate from your hosting account backups and are useful before making major changes.
Clone - Duplicate an existing installation. This is useful for creating a staging copy of your site to test changes before applying them to the live version.
Restore - Roll back to a previous Softaculous backup if something goes wrong.
Removing Apps Cleanly
When you delete a WordPress site or any other Softaculous installation, use Softaculous to remove it rather than just deleting the files manually. The Remove option in Softaculous also drops the associated database and database user, leaving your account clean. Manual file deletion leaves behind orphaned databases that clutter your account.
Softaculous Backups vs Hosting Backups
Softaculous backups and your regular hosting backups (done via cPanel's Backup Wizard) complement each other but are not the same thing. Softaculous backups capture a specific application at a point in time and restore it cleanly. Hosting backups capture your entire account - all files, all databases, all email. Both matter. Softaculous backups are excellent for application-level rollbacks; account-level backups protect everything in a worst-case scenario.
